| ABOUT TYNE PRINTS and this website:
Tyne Prints is the company started in 1980 by the artist, Raymond Massey and his wife, Gayle, to publish limited edition prints of his artwork. Though several other publishers are currently publishing and selling Massey art, Tyne Prints remains Ray's business which will continue to publish limited editions of only his artwork.
Since many editions shown in this website have been in publication for some years, many are nearly sold out. As an edition sells out, the few remaining copies increase in value based on the limited supply. The size of the edition also contributes to a prints value. The smaller the edition size, the greater the value of the print. Though a print may greatly increase in value once an edition is sold out, Tyne Prints does not handle the resale of prints, Beyond the signed and numbered prints which comprise the body of each edition there are a very limited number of prints that are sold under these designations:
AP- Artists' Proofs
P.P. - Press Proofs
H.C. -Hors de Commerce (French term for "Works of Commerce")
No more than 10-20 prints exist in any of the above categories. These special categories are often sold for higher prices because of their additional uniqueness.
REMARQUES and ENHANCEMENTS:
To add to the uniqueness of any print in an edition, a patron can make a special request to the artist to "remarque" or "Enhance" a print. A "remarque" can be an original pencil sketch or watercolor drawing added to the lower border of a limited edition print published on archival paper. An "enhancement" is an additional element such as a bird ,or something appropriate to the painting ,which the artist paints on a giclee canvas print to make it different from any other print in the edition. Additional charges for Remarques and Enhancements range from $400-800.
Printing technology:
Traditional photo-lithography uses off set printing presses, one press for each color in the color separation made from a color transparency of a work of art such as a painting. There may be 4 to 11 or more color separations used to create the final print.
New computer based printing or giclees, may be printed on either paper or canvas. Giclees on canvas closely resemble an original oil painting because the canvas print can be mounted on stretcher strips and framed without the necessity of adding glass or acid free matting which are needed to protect a print published on paper.
Please note that each print listed on our website states whether it is :
a lithograph on archival or museum grade, acid free paper which insures its longevity,
or, if it is a giclee that has been published on quality grade canvas.
Inks used in publishing all Massey prints are quality permanent inks..
