"Safe Harbor -Discovery Point"

- the Resolution and Discovery entering Nootka Sound, 1778 oil on board; 24 " x 30"

In Massey's second painting of Captain James Cook's arrival at Nootka Sound, the artist has chosen golden late afternoon sun to backlight the ships' sails and cast pink and deep purple shadows on the distant mountain peaks that surround the anchorage of "Snug Cove". The rocky shores of the Northwest Coast are warm and welcoming to the crews of the H.M.S. Resolution and H.M.S. Discovery. Friendly Nootka Indians in their traditional hats, paddle out to greet the ships, eager to trade their furs. These furs, one of the few items the Chinese wanted from the West, would be traded in China for tea and treasures of the Far East.
