The original Buffalo Yacht Club's club house is shown decked out for "Race Day" in the late 1890's. In the foreground are the Yacht Club's two top competitors, the 41' schooner, West Wind, mixing it up before the start with her arch rival, the 40' cutter Merle which is to the right and behind West Wind. Three small Toronto skiffs which were very popular in the 1890's are also shown as they race around a short course just off the club house, much as Lasers race today.
The original Buffalo Yacht Club was built on pilings in 1893 with a public dock or pier that extended out into the Black Rock Channel of the Niagara River from the foot of Porter Avenue. Shown at this dock is one of the famous large power yachts of the day, Captain Daniel Goode's Elmasada
As a teen, I learned to sail as junior member of this yacht club, and fell in love with sailing and boats, a love which I continue to reap great pleasure from while both cruising and racing my 32' Mariner Ketch on Lake Erie. This was my inspiration for painting "Race Day".
