| #3 "The Commodore Perry Entering Buffalo Harbour, May 1838" | |||||
| The side paddle wheeler, Commodore Perry, was captained by David Wilkerson out of Toledo, Ohio. It brought passengers and cargo to Buffalo when the harbor was free of ice. Twice in the spring of 1838 Wilkerson had attempted to enter Buffalo only to find the ice blocked the harbor impassable. On May 18 of 1838 Captain Wilkerson, also a part owner of the Commodore Perry, returned to Buffalo to find it still ice blocked. In frustration he ploughed through the ice and opened a channel from the open lake into the harbor. Citizens of Buffalo can be seen cheering him on at the original lighthouse. Immediately ice locked schooners left port using the new open channel and kept it open. There was much celebrating in Buffalo that night and an honorary dinner was given to toast Capt. Wilkerson which he did not attend. Captain Wilkerson had paddle wheels to repair and a schedule to maintain.
