# 5. The H.M.S. BEAGLE, Charles Darwins ship off Tierra del Fuego in 1832
Mr. Massey painted this original in the late 1970s as part of his Cape Horn Series. The series celebrated famous ships that rounded Cape Horn that had significant voyages . Charles Darwin was only a young man when he was asked to join the crew of the HMS BEAGLE as their naturalist. Captain Fitzroy was interested in proving that the Great Flood mentioned in the Bible was historically accurate. Ironically, Charles Darwins observations during the 5 year voyage of the Beagle, led him to formulate and later publish his Origin of the Species which rocked the civilized world and religion
as it was then believed.
Accompanying the BEAGLE was the HMS ADVENTURE which can be seen at the distant bend in the channel ahead. There are 12 species of penguins in the Antarctic. The largest are the over 5 feet tall like these depicted on the ice floe. |
