#18. “The ANN AND HOPE off Lin Tin Island, February 8, 1799”

Shown in convoy with British East Indiamen is the ANN AND HOPE from Provincetown, Rhode Island leaving Lin Tin Island which is just north of Hong Kong Island on the Pearl River. Piracy was so rampant in the South China Sea, that lone merchant ships stood little chance of returning home with their tea unless guarded by ships of the line such as the H.M.S. ARROGANT, a 74 gun ship on the left and the 64 gun H.M.S. INTREPID next in line, getting underway. The ANN AND HOPE chain of dry good stores that were originally supplied by this ship, existed for many decades in New England bearing her name.
