#13. The ALLIANCE Bound for Macao -1787
The ALLIANCE was a 36 gun, ex-U.S. Frigate that Robert Morris purchased for $26,000. In Philadelphia in May 1785 after the final action of the American Revolution. Despite the fact that many members of Congress wished to keep her so as to have at least one ship in the new U.S. Navy, she was sold out of service. Instead, Morris , who was also half owner of The EMPRESS OF CHINA , outfitted the ALLIANCE for the encouraging China Trade. She departed Philadelphia on June 13, 1787 from the foot of Chestnut Street. Peeking above the roofs on the left , you can see the dome of Market House. Dominating the skyline to the right of the dome is the spire of Christ Church which still stands in modern Philadelphia.
The ALLIANCE reached Macao on December 23, and after successfully trading there, she returned to Philadelphia on September 17, 1788.
