# 26. “ The H.M.S. DISCOVERY and RESOLUTION, Captain James Cook off Kawai Point, Kauai, Jan. 18, 1778”

On James Cook’s Third Voyage to the Pacific, he unsuccessfully searched for the Northwest Passage. However, in route to the Northwest Coast from wintering in Tahiti, Cook did discover the Sandwich Islands, now the Hawaiian Islands, which he named in honor of the Earl of Sandwich. The H.M.S. DISCOVERY and H.M.S. RESOLUTION made their first landfall at Kawai Point, Kauai, on January 19, 1778. It was the Feast of Lono and Islanders came out in canoes greeting Cook’s ships with welcome, offering roasting pigs and potatoes to hungry crews whose food supplies had run low. The Hawaiians thought the long foretold god, Lono, had finally arrived on his billowing cloud. To the Islanders who had never seen great European ships with white sails, they could only be gods. Finding no secure anchorage, Cook’s ships bore off and sailed along the southern shoreline. The rocky ridge above the ships is known as Queen Victoria’s Profile.

This was the first painting I completed for my series on Captain Cook's explorations and other early Pacific exploration. Painting this series has been like reliving these adventures in Paradise.
