#32 . " Honolulu Harbor: Gateway to the South Pacific, January 24, 1853 - Sovereign of the Seas, by Moonlight"
Bustling by moonlight, Honolulu is shown as a busy port by the 1850s. Donald McKays famous clipper ship, Sovereign of the Seas, is shown in port as she is the largest vessel ever to visit Honolulu and was barely able to cross the bar. Her radical sharp entry and lofty rig created quite a stir and she received crowds of visitors. Even the King of Hawaii visited this remarkable vessel.
Smaller inter island packets, such as the Pau in the foreground, are being heavily laden with chickens, pigs, horses, canoes and human passengers bound for Kauai. To the left of the painting is the old Custom House and in the middle ground is the Market Building. Behind that again is old Fort Honolulu.which would be torn down within a couple of years. Moonlight dances on the water with Diamond Head silhouetted against the background as island breezes and gentle waves lap the shore. Behind this western veneer is the old Honolulu with its numerous thatched houses which can be seen in the distance
