#28. " H.M.S. DISCOVERY and HMS CHATHAM off the Na Pali Coast, March 8, 1794"
While charting the Hawaiian Islands, the officers and men onboard George Vancouver's ships, HMS Discovery and HMS Chatham viewed some of the most beautiful coasts in the world. On March 8, 1794 they crossed Hanalei Bay and rounded Haena Point to sail down the incredibly unique Napali Coast. where great rocky buttresses and spires with deep purple crevasses tower upwards from the sea, and whose tops are often lost in the clouds torn ragged by the dragon toothed terrain. Reds and pinks of metallic oxides are patterned in contrast to rich verdant greenery. March is still the "Season of the Whale" off Kauai, and the Napali Coast is a vast playground for these friendly giant Humpbacks. After rounding the western end of Kauai, the Discovery and Chatham came to anchor at Waimea, still the only practical anchorage in Kauai.
