# 55. "GOOD OLE SUMMERTIME" - Mayville, Chautauqua Lake, NY, 1875
In 1875 the first generation of steamboats plying the waters of Chautauqua Lake, New York,
were the sidewheeler, Mayville and the stern wheeler , Jamestown, This typical summer scene shows passengers arriving by train to the train depot at the foot of the Mayville's steamboat pier. Mayville, located at the northern tip of Lake Chautauqua, was the earliest popular tourist destination.Travelers could stay there at the Chautauqua Hotel to enjoy the lake or travel on by steamboat to Jamestown or by horse drawn wagon to various other points of interest around the lake. Roads were not well developed in the region, and steamboat travel flourished on Chautauqua for several decades.
