# 56. Moonlight Passage- the Enterprise Departs Cleveland Harbor in 1834-”

The Steamboat Enterprise was built at Cleveland in 1825 on speculation that the $5000 that Cleveland received for harbor improvements from the Federal Government, would would be enough to construct a breakwall that would keep the mouth of the Cuyahoga River free of a sandbar. The Enterprise had a low pressure beam engine built at Pittsburg and it was the first steamboat on the Upper Great Lakes to use this type of engine. The Enterprise was instrumental in accelerating the growth of Cleveland as she brought immigrants west to this booming town. By the mid-1830's the Enterprise was an old boat for Lake Erie and the passenger trade. During the early years of the 1830's, numerous larger and faster steamboats had come into service making the Enterprise less and less competitive. The view of the painting is looking somewhat southward on the Cuyahoga River towards the foot of Superior Street.
