| # 57. "A Good Day for Drying" - Buffalo in 1825
This view is looking eastward from the banks of Buffalo River towards the village of Buffalo in 1825. The lighthouse keeper's wife hangs out the family's laundry to dry in the same wind that powers the sailing ship down the Buffalo River. The Erie Canal had just been completed and boom times were in store for Buffalo as the western terminus of the Canal. On the bluff is the village of Buffalo, and on the same bank of the river are the warehouses of the now thriving harbor. The light house shown here was built in 1818 and was the only navigation light for Buffalo's harbor until the "China Light" was built in 1832 on her present site.
