"The Henry Clay approaching Detroit - 1829"
This sketch of Detroit in the late 1820's shows the steamboat Henry Clay as she steams downriver, The view is from just above the village of Sandwich, and the windmill is typical of those found on the Detroit shore, Early maps show a mill and a few French houses just above Sandwich. The Henry Clay was built at Black Rock on the Niagara River in 1825 and was instrumental in developing the Upper Great Lakes.
After I had transferred the sketch to board and added color, the steamboat seemed to get lost. Also the Henry Clay had an elaborate stern and it was a shame to leave it out. The result was I placed the Henry Clay closer to shore and had her approaching Detroit instead of leaving. At this stage I am still working on the sky and feeling my way with the colors. Although it can not be seen on this image, the detail of the village of Detroit is beginning to come in.
